Hi,

I'm Laura. Welcome to my blog. 

I've been writing since I was nine years old, when I won my first competition. Since then, I've written books, short stories, poetry, plays and a few short films. 

I'm probably best known for the book here:

I was commissioned to write Bloody British History: Plymouth as part of a series of books from The History Press. You'll find it in the gift shop in The Box, the museum in Plymouth, and also in WH Smith in Plymouth, as well as available pretty much everywhere online. It was fun to write this compilation of true horror stories from 10,000 years of Plymouth history.

I've also written for 1418NOW, Forelock Books, Amnesty International, Book of My Life, the Scottish Arts Trust, and many others. Sadly I've not had much time to write, but I hope this blog gets me back into writing for a living.

the world since 2015

  I was checking to see if this blog was listed yet in the search engines, only to discover my extraordinary interview online with WordMothers.  From 2015, nearly 10 years ago.  So much has changed in my life since 2015. It took my breath away.  It was a delight to read it, to acknowledge the energy I had in 2015, the hope. So much has been taken away from me, from us, since, BUT the hope is still there.  Thank you WordMothers  for keeping that interview. I'm afraid the twitter and website addresses are wrong now. I've had to reinvent myself so often in the past ten years.  My father died later that year, and that was tragic, and probably the start of the change, but it wasn't the hurdle that it might have been. He left me still wanting to write, but life after 2015 was determined to send me over so many hurdles that my potential career really took a terrible hit. So this blog is about getting back on track.  Hopefully I'll be able to offer advice...

A new blog

 I know what you are thinking.  Yet another writer coming online to bore you with old material. Oh,  and their (mostly irrelevant) thoughts on the world.  And you would be right.   I've tried this before, a number of times,  and it hasn't worked, but this time I would like to make a real go of it. So there will be a revisit to some old material, hopefully some new material too, and yes, lots of thoughts on the world.  This time I'm going to try to be relevant. In my 58th year on this planet, I might at last have something worth saying. Let's see where this goes and whether I do a better job this time.  I'll let you be the judge.  Or maybe not.  I'm not really here to make friends anymore. I just want to get a few things said because they have to be said.  Here's a pretty picture anyway.

Mum's Taxi

  My first act as a parent, so precarious, I took you home.   Now I'm waiting for the ferry and it’s raining and it’s cold. The roads have turned to rivers, the rivers oceans, but you know I will drive against the tide. I’ll be there to take you home.   However far you wander, I am ready by the phone. However dark your journey, I have been there. Yes, I know - There’ll be nights you feel abandoned, staring at the endless road, but I will find you. I’ll pull up beside you, headlights shining, and we’ll turn on the radio. I love to hear you sing. I live to know your song.
